Poor Genetics And Weak Nerves

Dear Mr. Katz:

I recently purchased your book, “Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer!” and have tried very hard to curb my dog Honey’s aggressions, which I have now recognized as both fear and food aggression… after reading your book.

But instead of better, I fear it is getting worse.

We adopted her from the age of 2-3 months, and she was fine in the beginning. Very loving and extremely hyperactive. The hyperactivity continues, and she still jumps up at anyone coming near the house. She seems to fear tall men, especially if they have anything in their hands, like a garden rake or spade, and she backs away from strangers, even small children. She is afraid. She gets aggressive with anyone she senses is afraid of dogs, and she has gone for them, making it worse for them, of course! She becomes aggressive with anyone who passes her by when any food is around, and she will growl and snarl at them, telling them in effect that the food is hers, so hands off!

To crown it all off, she snarled and growled at me today when I went up to stroke her, which she has not done before. I have always tried to correct her, either by the leash, or we have a muzzle which we correct her with, and failing that, I will put her in her crate as a punishment. I am not a novice with a dog. Before Honey, we had the most wonderful shepherd/husky dog, who was similarly abandoned, and I never had one problem with him – he was wonderful. I have taken honey to obedience classes – She does sit and stay, also goes down when she is instructed to.

I feel that I have done everything possible to alleviate her aggression, but it doesn’t seem to work. I have two daughters who both pour love on her too, and quite frankly, I am afraid one day that she will become vicious – Can you please give me some advice, because I do not want to have to have her put down.

I have tried everything you recommend in your book, including spitting in her food, and making her wait to eat last. But I must be doing something wrong! I know mixed breeds aren’t your favorite, but please make an exception in my case. I love dogs, and hate to be beaten. I am also English, and you must know that we are softies when it comes to animals!

I await your reply in haste!

Sincerely,

Diana

Dear Diana,

First, let me point out that I share my home with a mixed breed.

And yes… I like him. A whole lot! His name is Forbes and he is one of the most compatible dogs I’ve ever had the pleasure of sharing my life with.

To be honest, I have a feeling that your dog’s issues are very much a result of poor genetics and weak nerves.

But before jumping to any conclusions, you must first recognize that all of the information you’ve droned on about provides me with NONE of the information I need in order to help you.

deoxyribonucleic-acid-1500076_640So… what do I need? I need to know what happens when you correct the dog? Does she continue to act aggressive? Does she stop immediately? Does she try to bite you? Does she go submissive? And once you get her to pay attention to you, what’s happened once you’ve started to create new/positive associations with the stimulus, as described in the book?

These are all of the questions you need to be asking yourself. As well as:

– Is my timing on the money? Is the dog associating my corrections with the behavior (the aggression).

– Am I being consistent? (Be honest… if the dog isn’t getting a firm correction EVERY TIME she exhibits the behavior, then it’s no wonder that you’re not getting the results you seek.)

– Are my corrections motivational? If the distraction/stimulus is more motivational than your correction, then you’ll never get any results. You’ll know that your correction is motivational when the dog stops looking at the stimulus and starts looking at you.

Please let me know. However, judging on what you’ve described I would not be surprised if this is mostly the results of poor genetics and weak nerves. And in which case, you will never be able to overcome the dog’s genetics, so the dog should either be put to sleep or confined to such a lifestyle that she only comes in contact with you and people that she does not show the aggression towards. But before you make any snap decisions I would recommend consulting with a professional who can evaluate the dog for you. It’s impossible to give an accurate assessment without seeing the mutt. Err… dog.

That’s all for now, folks!

Craft Guidelines For The Grandma

To get started we can begin with crochet abbreviations to help you relate to the process. Crochet experts use the terms beg (Beginning) bet (Between), bk lp (Back loop) ch (chain), ch-(previous chain), cont (Continue), dc (double crochet), dec (decreasing), dtr (double/triple crochet), ft lp (Front loop), hdc (half-double crochet), inc (Increasing), lp (loops), and so on.

Those who crochet must learn how to handle the hook, work jointly, chain stitch, slip knot, and crochet a single row.

How to hook:

To hold your hook you would start with a pencil. The hook may have a resting finger, which you can locate your thumbs to gain control.

How to work in union:

Once you have a hold on your hook, weave the thread/yarn so that your, left fingers have control, and can be used to apply pressure. Once you begin your project (Work), you want to use your thumb and the center left finger to press the stitches.

How to slip knot:

You want to form a shape-like pretzel by looping your yarn about, allow the loose ends to drop, fallen behind your loop. Pull the ends of your yarn without pulling too tight.

How to chain stitch:

On your hook position a slipknot and use your hands, i.e. center left finger and the thumb to hold the yarn in place. Wrap your yarn first up and then over your hook starting at the back and moving to the front. You will need to familiarize your self with this procedure, since it is a basic crocheting technique known as “Yarn over Yo.”

Now pull the yearn using your hook bringing it through the lp (loop). When you yarn over Yo and combine it with lp, it forms a ch. (Chain)

Continue until you have the acceptable chain and continue motion on even strokes and until the stitches that form a chain and each stitch (st(s) are even. Near your work area, hold your chain and continue twisting whilst avoiding counting the loops on your hook.

How to crochet a single line:

Beneath your crown loops insert your hook at the second chain away from your hook and begin Yarn over Yo crocheting. You should continue to stitch between the two loops. Continue the yarn over process and pull your yarn through the chain to it meets two loops on your hook. Continue the Yo process again and pull the yarn through the other two loops.

Once you complete your hook, work, slipknots, chain stitch, single line, etc, you will need to learn how to double crochet, half-double, triple; slip stitch, back loop, popcorn stitch, etc. Behind the steps is the process of working back loops, chain space, stitches between, and about the post.

How to double stitch:

yarn-1615524_640To double crochet you will need to perform the yarn over Yo steps and then insert your hook into the third chain away from the Yo and hook. Next, pull your yarn so that it goes through your chain and three loops at the hook. Continue the Yarn over steps and pull the yarn through the next two loops. Again, continue the Yarn over and pull the yarn through the remaining two loops.

How to half double:

Conduct the yarn over steps and insert your hook so that it goes into the second chain away from your hook. Yarn over and string your yarn through the third loops.

How to triple crochet:

Yarn over a couple of times and insert your hook so that it goes into the fourth chain away from the hook. Yarn over and stretch your yarn through the chain and the fourth loop at your hook. Yarn over, stretch the yarn through the second loops at the hook, and finish your three time steps.

Visit Amsterdam

Amsterdam is located in the west of the Netherlands and is the country’s largest city. Also it is of great importance because the city is the capital of the country. If we go a little deeper into the name of the city then there is a concept behind the word “Amsterdam”. Basically, the concept is that there is a dam inside the city whose name is “Amstel” and also there is a dam on the river so combining these two words the name of the city popped out as “Amsterdam”. During the 12th Century Amsterdam became one of the leading and important ports for trading purposes. During that time the city was well known for the trade of diamonds.

Geographically Amsterdam is located on the west side of Holland. The position is 2 meters above sea level.
Amsterdam, due to the ocean, has a cool climate. Winters are very cold having temperatures most of the time under 0 degrees, and at night it even falls below -5 degrees easily. The summers are hot but most of the time just warm. The summer temperatures commonly range from 20 to 30 degrees. Rainfalls are a common thing in Amsterdam as the city enjoys rainfalls for 175 days on average throughout the year.

Architecture wise Amsterdam is a very rich city which has a lot of history. In the present day Amsterdam is the only city in the world which has two buildings made of total wood which were built in the 13th and 14th Centuries. Want To Learn How To Play Some Baseball?

The great thing about baseball is that its appeal really does span all socioeconomic backgrounds and cultures. With hard work and the right information, baseball is a sport that is accessible to all. Keep on reading to discover how to get the most out of playing baseball each and every time out.

Make sure you grip the ball properly and toss it correctly when you’re learning how to pitch the ball. First, you have to have the seam right under your middle finger. After that you should put your thumb along the other seam. This will let you grip the ball properly to increase accuracy, speed and distance.

Remember that baseball is only a game. Yes, it may be important to you and your team, but you don’t want to let it get you down. Even if you make a mistake, if you keep positive there’s always a chance to correct that mistake. But if you let it bother you, chance are you’ll make another mistake.

Learn how to use cut-off men when playing the outfield. With your adrenaline pumping, you may feel like you can throw that ball clear to home plate, but cut-off men are typically the better choice to make. Getting the ball back into your closest infielder will give your team a better shot for an out. The shorter throw means a more accurate throw.

Safety is vital when playing all types of sports. This is very true for baseball. Prevent injury by always knowing the location of the ball. If you fail to pay attention, a ball could hit you in the mouth and result in a broken tooth. Additionally, a slider sliding into the base can cause injury to your legs.

For kids in baseball, make sure they their hands are placed properly for hitting. The top hand on the bat needs to be sitting near the same height as their rear shoulder, about 3 to 6 inches from that rear shoulder. Their rear elbow needs to be around 45-degrees. The front elbow needs to be lower and about even with the back elbow.

If you are a first base coach, you have certain responsibilities. Basically, you must encourage the batter to hustle down the first baseline on all infield hits. You also have to remind the runners as to how many outs there are. You must instruct the runner when it is time ti take an extra base, round first base or hold up. You also have to tell runners how far they should go on pop flies.

The mowing of the grass plays a role in how ground balls behave. Lines that are commonly present in the outfield could make the baseball roll either way on the ground. Sometimes, a field is patchy and can make ground balls difficult.

Make sure that your baseball glove is properly broken in before you begin to practice. Whenever you get a new glove, work the glove to help it become subtle. Throw your baseball into it. Also, you can apply leather softener to make it more malleable. Hit your weave with a hard fist. When you break in your glove properly, it will perform better during practice.

Catching a grounder shouldn’t be done by a cross-body reach. Reposition yourself by shuffling to get the ball lined up with your glove. Otherwise, when you try to catch the ball, the ball may hit the side of your glove.

Baseball is beloved in all corners of the globe and has fans of all descriptions. Given the relatively small amount of equipment required to play, it is open to nearly everyone. Keep the above tips handy, and it will be possible for every aspiring ball player to learn the skills necessary to play successfully.

Religion, Politics And Fear Of The Unknown!

There were no Catholics in our town before JFK. If there were, none of the kids in my gang knew about them. It was rumored that they had a church in town somewhere behind the local A & P, but I never found it. I was already in my teens before I saw my first real life Catholic. He didn’t look much different than me, but my mother acted like I had spoken to the anti-Christ himself!

As a kid growing up in the south in the early ’60s, our church was the spiritual center of our universe. My family was all Southern Baptists, as were most of my friends. A few acquaintances of mine went to the Methodist Church and one to a Church of God. We just didn’t know any Catholics and probably would’ve been afraid of them if one had showed up on our door step.

I don’t think they were really hiding; it’s just that no one paid them any attention. That all changed when John F. Kennedy became President of the United States of America! My Sunday School teacher at that time, speaking for many in the south, declared in a fearful voice that the 1960 presidential race could mean the end to Christianity as we knew it! There was a catholic running for that high office and as far as she was concerned, he was the devil himself and she knew without a doubt that we would all go to hell if he were elected!

The Bible belt at that time was against anyone or anything that promised change. John Kennedy wasn’t a Baptist, Methodist, Church of Christ or even Pentecostal! He was an outsider and not to be trusted with the leadership of our country!

These sentiments belonged to many in the south during that decade and they weren’t confined to Sunday school teachers. Social changes are often served on the same platter with fear of the unknown. A different wind was definitely blowing through our southern cotton fields.

With President Kennedy in the White House, attitudes in the south slowly began to change; not over night. There was civil unrest in many parts of the country, a war in Viet Nam and we began to find Catholics everywhere in our little town! In fact, folks we’d known for years were now proudly admitting to being Catholic! This was part of the change that was taking place throughout the country.

Most of the crowd I ran with, having been sheltered from anything that might have been considered social or spiritual advancement, soon found that our newly discovered Catholic friends were still the good folks they were before JFK! One of my pals at the time went to Mass every Sunday but I never knew that until after the John Kennedy was elected president.

Sadly in the south, President John F. Kennedy was blamed for every perceived difficulty that anyone faced at that time. While not through his first term as president, he was assassinated in Dallas, Texas one bright November afternoon in 1963.

Everyone who was living at that time knows exactly where and what they were doing when they heard news of the shooting. I was working for a residential construction company at the time, carrying unused concrete blocks to the back of the house we were building, where they would be hauled to the next job.

We had a radio setting on a stack of brick and George Jones was singing when the music was interrupted by a somber voice telling us that President Kennedy had been shot an hour before in Texas.

I recall as vividly as if it were yesterday that there was a dozen laborers and brick masons working, including me, when the announcement was made. There was a moment of shocked silence and then a loud and raucous cheer went up from the laborers and brick masons working on the house.

“I hope the S.O.B. dies!” yelled one of them.
“They ought to give the guy who shot him a medal!” screamed another.
“It’s about time someone had the guts to kill that S.O.B.” shouted a guy with a shovel in his hands.

Those were a few of the nicer comments from a blue collar working crew in the south at the time. I’ve often wondered if President Kennedy had announced that he was a Baptist, Methodist or Presbyterian, would he have sparked such outrage in the south. Maybe, maybe not. I guess I’ll never know.

Great Dental Care Advice For Your Family

Obtaining quality dental care can be a challenging and intimidating process. The key to getting the service you and your family truly need is to take the time to do your research. By applying the tips below, you can prepare yourself to identify the care providers best suited to your unique needs.

Remember that you are what you eat, and so are your teeth. If you smoke a lot and drink red wine often, your teeth do get discolored. If you want whiter teeth, change what you eat. If it’s dark going on your mouth, your teeth are going to get dark from it.

If you see even a small amount of blood in your mouth after brushing your teeth, it is time to make an appointment with your dentist or periodontist. Bleeding gums may be a symptom of gum disease which can be a big problem. Prevent yourself from infections, bone and tooth loss and other diseases by stopping gum disease in its tracks.

If you are worried that you aren’t effectively removing plague, try using a disclosing mouthwash or tablet. Follow the directions on the product. Plaque build-up will show as a bright blue or pink stain on your tooth surface. Please note that it’s not good to use this sort of product if you don’t have the time to brush your teeth thoroughly afterward. It’s definitely not ideal if you’re in a hurry to leave the house!

If your young child is swallowing a lot of toothpaste, consider switching to a toothpaste without fluoride. Fluorideis quite beneficial in keeping teeth healthy, but it can be dangerous if you injest a large amount. A young child does need to brush daily, but sometimes using a non-fluoride toothpaste in the earliest stages of brusing can be beneficial.

Don’t smoke cigarettes. Smoking promotes tartar, plaque and also causes discoloration of your teeth. Smoking will increase the risk of developing oral cancer and gum disease. Stop smoking to ensure that you maintain the healthy smile you want.

Talk to your dentist immediately about any changes you notice in your mouth. Be it sudden increased sensitivity to cold, a dull ache or an odd spot that won’t go away on its own, your dentist knows the difference between a simple issue with teeth and major underlying health issues. Call right away to report any such problems.

Eat healthy fruits and vegetables to help keep teeth cleaned naturally. The natural abrasive qualities of fibrous fruits and vegetables, such as apples and carrots, help to break down and remove sticky plaque from teeth and gum lines. In addition to eating healthier snacks, you will be taking steps to keep your teeth looking their best.

It is important that flossing be done on a daily basis. Although your dentist probably tells you this every time you go to the dentist, it is likely that you do not actually do it. Without flossing, it’s not possible for you to clean your mouth completely. Flossing gets rid of all the trapped debris between your teeth. This is great for whitening the teeth, as well as improving your gums’ health.

If you’re searching for the right dentist, check around to see what you can find out. Ask family and friends, check online reviews, and talk to patients of dentists you’re considering. All of this will help you make a much better judgment call as to which dentist you’re going to use in the future.

Making sure you get the type of dental care you want is not always easy. However, with the right sort of knowledge, the process can be made somewhat simpler. Keep the above tips close at hand, and you will be ready to find providers able to give you the attention and service you deserve.

How Railway And Harbor Design Is Looking To The Future

Some of the biggest and most involved engineering projects come about because of the need for greater transport links, networks and systems. Everything from airport and harbor design to building new roads and bridges comes about because of the need to accommodate increasing numbers of people travelling around the world both for business and pleasure.

Underground rail systems are now the backbone of most major cities across the world but they are also the most troublesome to achieve. The recent construction of the extension to the London Underground’s Jubilee Line is a case in point. It was delayed several times due to problems associated with tunneling.

The project was originally expected to take just under three years to complete but the delays made this impossible. There were technical problems and also a tunnel collapse during work on the Heathrow Express’s NATM tunnel. The collapse focused minds and extra care was taken with the tunneling. Over 30 major London buildings stood on top of the proposed route including the Government’s Treasury HQ, the Ritz Hotel and St James Park.

All the considerable engineering problems had to be overcome and although the cost on the project did increase the Jubilee Line now provides an important link in the capital city and will play a significant role in the 2012 Olympics.

One of the biggest engineering challenges of any is that of harbor design. The planet’s oceans are an enormous natural environment with incredible, sometimes devastating power. In designing and constructing a harbor there are many considerations and problems to overcome that are unique and not found in any other type of engineering project.

Bank construction, breakwaters, quays and wharves all need to be properly accounted for in harbor design and construction. It wouldn’t be far from the truth to say that every type of engineering is involved when it comes to the construction of a harbor. Factors to be figured into any plan or project include soil foundation, water supply, sewage systems, structures, electrical supply and construction.

Because the environment in any harbor design is volatile and sometimes unpredictable the need for every element to be properly considered at the planning stage is vital. Unlike some engineering projects where there is some room to maneuver during the actual construction process, the building of a harbor does not afford such luxury. A small missed detail or miscalculation can bring a project to a complete halt and have a detrimental effect on the cost.

The introduction of sophisticated computer software has helped in the planning and initial stages of harbor design but unlike other areas where engineering technology has improved greatly, the engineering techniques in harbor construction have not improved to such a degree. In part this can put down to the unpredictable nature of the environment and the inability to fully control the ocean.

Next year sees the start of work on the new Edinburgh Harbor. The project involves the transformation of a 26 hectare brownfield site along with the expansion of the existing Ocean Terminal. The engineering considerations on the project are considerable with plans for new terminals, piers and a marina which will include a berth for the cross-Forth ferry.

The new harbor design also includes plans for an improved infrastructure and transport links that will help the already well established tourist industry move forward. A state of the art harbor in the region could significantly open up the area to American visitors and investors. Upon completion it is hoped that the new Edinburgh Harbor will bring in 200 million pounds annually to the Scottish economy and will create thousands of jobs.

How You Should Deal With Managing Your Reputation

The reputation that your business has is incredibly important. A good reputation builds a solid and loyal customer base. Then you get customers simply by word of mouth, based on your reputation. So here are some things you can do to ensure your business has a solid reputation with a loyal customer following.

Monitoring your personal reputation or business brand is very critical to online reputation management. Set up automatic alerts to happen when your name comes up. Use Trackur, Monitor This and Google Alerts to send you notices when new content comes up. That way, you can know the very next day, if not sooner, when someone is talking about you.

When you are on your social media pages, make sure that you try your best to sound as real as possible. Trying to sound too corporate or too casual will only make you come across as a big phony. It is best to find some middle ground that allows you to act more natural.

Some people are simply impossible to please reasonably. If you believe your customer has a irrelevant or untruthful complaint, do what you can to make them happy. As a business owner, sometimes you have to suck up your pride and think about how your customer or client is always right.

Always visit your social media sites. Consumers often discuss different businesses at these places. When you monitor your social presence, you will be able to see anything negative being said about your business, and nip it in the bud quickly. It will minimize damage to your reputation.

You need to plan out your business moves online. You can’t just start replying randomly to all of your customer’s posts. You need to take some time to plan out how you’re going to approach them and what you’re going to say. Not doing this may cause some problems for you.

If you come across a negative comment or review about your company, do not ignore it. Post a response to it and defend your position. Sometimes people who post negative comments only tell one side of the story. It is up to you to present your side of it so the readers will get a fuller picture.

To boost your business reputation among your customers, give them a chance to get to know your company better. Interact with them more on social networks. When people see that your company is not just a faceless corporate entity, they will receive you better, and your business reputation will improve.

Make sure to read the bad reviews of all of the companies that are in direct competition with you. This will give you a good idea of things that needed to be avoided to keep customers happy. While there is nothing that will suit every customer, this will definitely help you find a happy medium.

Even if a customer contacts you with an unfounded complaint against your company, be sure not to dismiss his complaint so readily. You should always acknowledge and thank the customer for taking time to contact you. Offer to investigate further. Offer to give him something extra for his troubles. This will lessen the likelihood that he will bad-mouth your business around his social circle.

If your company sells a product or service, make sure you offer money back guarantees on your products without any inconvenience to the customers. This is a large part if providing good customer relations. When a customer wants to make a return on something, you could lose money because it’s impossible to resell a used item as new. However, repeat customers are important, and offering a great guarantee is one way to get them.

You can see how important a reputation is when building up a business. Word of mouth is often more important than any advertising campaign could ever be. So use the tips from above to help establish a good reputation in your community. Building a loyal customer foundation is one of the best investments that a business can make.
